“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it<\/em>.\u00a0If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live , ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name,<\/em>\u00a0he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you<\/em>” (John 14:13-26).<\/p>\n Our objective in looking at the words of the Old Testament, in looking at the law as it was given to the Jews by God through Moses was to show the advancement of the ideas concerning the treatment of one’s brother, the stranger or one’s neighbor which we can see as being ALL the same if we look closely enough. It has ever been the commandment of God that we should care for the stranger or the neighbor and this is, as we have seen, the function of the Law of God and was to be accomplished because it was the law; we see this in the oft repeated ending to a command saying “I am the\u00a0<\/em>LORD<\/em>” (Leviticus 19:18) which is expressed as such or with even greater authority as “I am the LORD<\/em>\u00a0your God” (Levitcus 25:38). From here we looked at the evolution of this idea of Love for the stranger, the brother and the neighbor for the sake of the law to the Master’s frame of reference where we keep His words<\/em> for the reward of the Kingdom and of discipleship both of which signify that ONENESS of the True man, the Soul, with his expression.<\/p>\n Our premise here begins with our saying that the doctrines of the churches today eschew the denial of desire and many yet preach the Earthly rewards that are promised to the Jew as the result of keeping the words of God in those Old Testament days. In the words of the Master that we published in the last essay there is no such promise; there is however the promise of the Kingdom:<\/p>\n The reality of the Master’s words are built into the sayings above and this reality is that the rewards of keeping His words<\/em> and of following Him<\/em> ARE “treasure in heaven<\/em>” and, of course, Life in the “kingdom of God<\/em>“. We must recognize here the additional reality that “the kingdom of God is within you<\/em>” (Luke 17:21) lest we fall into the doctrinal beliefs that this Kingdom is\u00a0elsewhere\u00a0and that we do not see it in this Life. From the perspective of the Old Testament we have not yet seen the scriptural evidence that the rewards of doing the commandments of God are for the here and now as far as the Jew in that day was concerned, and so let us look here at some sources of this understanding and realize that many in the churches still believe and teach that this is the way of the Lord in this new dispensation brought by the Christ as well.<\/p>\n These are the blessings and the cursings, not of the law but rather of doing or not doing the commandments of God; these are the rewards and the punishments in the here and now for the Jew but, these are not the rewards nor the punishments for a man today nor has it been since the advent of the Master who teaches us the greater Truths. These greater Truths are not new but rather just revealed by the teachings of the Christ who sees humanity as ready for the revelation. While it is True that the Master tells us that “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled<\/em>” (Matthew 5:18), this should not be taken to mean that the reality of rewards and punishments stays as these are not the law but the results of the law. The law stands and the most part of it is our instructions on how to live with and how to treat our brothers, the stranger and our neighbors and this is precisely the message of the Master as well when He speaks to us on Love saying that “The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these<\/em>” (Mark 12:29-31).<\/p>\n The focus<\/em> for the Jew was that he be righteous in his ways and that he keep the commandments of the Lord….ALL of them. His reward in this is seen in the scripture above as is the punishment for his failure. We should try to understand here that the law is clear and if it is not subject to change, which according to the Master it is not, then this should not be subjected to the watering down of the reality that we find in Christianity. It is not a matter of believing in Christ Jesus except when we understand that believing in<\/em> or believing on<\/em> to be equivalent to keeping His words<\/em>…..ALL of them. The anticipated rewards in the Old Testament require that one keep the commandments and the teaching on this today that seeks to take advantage of rewards in the Word, must then necessarily include this same dynamic, that one keep ALL of the commandments, all that is in the law.
