Love is the Fulfilling of the Law
ON GOD; Part CLXXIII
We started yesterday by saying that we have completed our review of the last lines from the three sayings of the Master that we had been discussing and then proceeded to discuss these same points yet again and this is good from the perspective of the understanding that we can receive from each of them. Not only for ourselves but even more importantly the understanding that we can realize regarding our brothers who share with us both our divinity and our plight of Life in form. We have also spent much time revealing what the Apostle Paul writes to the Romans as a Truth that can also help us to understand and to better appreciate the reality of Life in form and the nature of that Life as it effects the True man, the Soul, or as Paul paints this for us “this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). Of course we should not understand these words as they are commonly seen by doctrine but as the reality of the Christ Within, the living Soul of man who is ever with the Lord and who, by reason of this mystery, lends His Life and His consciousness to the body and the personality for a time during His incarnation. We should also understand the idea of gentile here as a complicated word whose meaning encompasses everything from the heathen to the generality of a people2 and which we should likely understand as mankind in the world of form and focused upon that part of Life. Can we see here Paul’s acknowledgement of the Master’s words to His disciples that “Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given” (Matthew 13:11)?
While we are here on this topic it brings us to other sayings of the apostle regarding the Christ Within and many of these are from that same chapter of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans that we have been discussing and reflecting on for several weeks. What follows is the first thirteen verses of this same chapter and these lead up to that part that we have considered to be an encapsulated version of the whole of the Life of man on the Earth, that we are born into this Life, subject to vanity which is the illusion and the glamour of the world by the Plan of God and for the purpose that we are destined to achieve which is to be “delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God“. Let us look now at the verses that lead up to this revelation of Life; Paul says:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live” (Romans 8:1-13).
The verse that follows this here is the first verse of what we have been speaking on and starts with Paul’s telling us that “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14) and it is to this idea and the following revelation that the our new verses above testify. Based upon what we have come to understand from the succeeding verses we should be able to have new insight into Paul’s message here in this part. We should be able to see that in these things, when spoken of the man in form, the creature as he tells us later, that we have the same dynamic of which we speak in this blog regarding the True nature of man and that ever current choice between God and mammon. There is little else that the apostles words can mean to the man who has sensed the duality and is struggling with that choice and when seen through the understanding of the latter part of the chapter first, with the understanding of the subjection of the the creature and the creation to the ways of the world with that hope of deliverance, we can better perceive Paul’s intent in these words above. We will leave these words to another post as we have committed ourselves to another matter today and it will do us all well to read these words and to try the see the common threads of the Soul nature and the nature of the creature in form as they play upon each other.
For the rest of today’s post we will center our attention on the Evening Reflection that has been posted as our Quote of the Day now for some time and which contains within itself a personal and a universal appeal for the ways of God to be present in the ways of man and especially in ourselves through our own activity of positive GoodWill. This is a short and simple invocation and mantram that has within its words much power, a power that comes through the realization of the Truths that it expresses. This simple expression goes thus:
Evening Reflection
May the Power of the One True God flow through His group of all true servers;
May the Love of the Christ characterize the lives of all who seek to aid in His work;
May I fulfill my part in the one work through self-forgetfulness, harmlessness and right speech
This rendition of the Evening Reflection contains some modifications that we made in these posts in order to make it more attractive to the Christian man who we were seeking to influence with our words. The original text is not very much different and says:
May the Power of the one Life pour through the group of all true servers.
May the Love of the one Soul characterise the lives of all who seek to aid the Great Ones.
May I fulfill my part in the one Work through self-forgetfulness, harmlessness, and right speech
For a prayer or invocation to be used and understood by men around the world, it must be universal in scope and the first line here does express this universality from either of the two perspectives above. These things are essentially the same, the One God and the One Life for as we KNOW God IS Life and it is His Life that flows through and carries His essence to the entirety of the Creation. We ask here in prayer that that Power flow through the Servers of the Lord in a way that they can be consciously aware of its Presence and this is for ALL who serve and not only those who can be counted as disciples and as aspirants as these would necessarily KNOW that this Power streams forth from spiritual levels and through their mortal form. The flow of Power is a distinguishing mark of the True disciple, it is the expectation of the aspirant and the hope of others and we should see and recognize here that there are many servers in the secular world who KNOW little about these things consciously but through whom a recognition of the Power within would serve ALL well. Recognized or not, we pray that the Power of the God Within each can foster and build each man’s desire and ability to serve his fellowman.
This invocation is also called the Mantram of the New Group of World Servers. The key word here is servers and this is an esoteric and unaligned group that is not a group at all from the perspective of the man in the world. Many there are who do not recognize that this group exits and yet are a part of it. Many there are who serve through the impulse of their Inner Man, their Souls but who do not recognize this impulse at all. As we have said in previous posts, the Soul is ever in the Kingdom of God and is but expressing what he is capable of through form and most always trying to gain the attention of the form Life which is strangely his. Let us look at this as we present it above: that we are born into this Life, subject to vanity which is the illusion and the glamour of the world by the Plan of God and for the purpose that we are destined to achieve which is to be “delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God“. In this encapsulated version of Life we find men, ALL men, born into this world of illusion and glamour and ALL this does work out under the Plan of God. For us we see the spiritual nature of this creation and this Life but for many who would qualify as servers this spiritual aspect may not yet be apparent. Remambering that it is by the will of the Soul that man is incarnated and it is by the ability of that Soul to build a suitable form and in accordance with his accumulated karmic responsibility that we have the myriad of different combinations of body, emotion and mind that exist at any given time in the more than six billion incarnated beings. This being said and remembering also the difficulty of finding the Path and of understanding one’s Life goal of eventual discipleship we should be able to see that the precepts of our posts are not going to be universally accepted or attainable by the average man in form. This is not said to imply that it is not possible for it is within the ken of ALL to strive and in striving to build upon what inkling of Soul consciousness that may be working in each of us. I was not at this point in spiritual Life always but I brought myself to this point by seeing and hearing the promptings of the Soul and building slowly the foundation and then the structure of my current aspirational Soul consciousness. This same is likely True for many who read these words. Our primary point here is that there are many in whom their own consciousness senses the reality of the Souls promptings and not just the pull of the world of vanity, of illusion and of glamour and it is these who we find among those servers of the Plan and whom we find in the New Group of World Servers but who at the same time do not KNOW of either.
Again we should remember that although these ideas may sound strange they are no stranger the any of the ideas regarding God and man that have ever been put forth; they are rather more understandable from a logical perceptive as there is a sense of order an of purpose to this that is not found in the doctrines of the churches. We should also remember the this depiction of this is based upon the spiritual vision of the writer and although this is intended to be accurate and True, it is seen through the personality of a man and ALL men are subjected to some degree of that same vanity of which the apostle speaks.
So then we have here a group of servers, the membership of this group is not in a list; there is no headquarters and there are no scheduled meetings. It is made up of people from around the world and its membership is open to all races, all classes, all politics, all religions; ALL PEOPLE. Can we see here that this criteria or lack of criteria is also the hallmark of the True Church of Christ and that He and this True Church will discriminate against no one and will hold no prejudices. Can we also see that a man will know that he is a member when he has that desire to work for GoodWill and Right Human Relations throughout the world and when he can appreciate and applaud the efforts of others who work for the benefit of their fellowman and, in that appreciation and praise, seek to reach out and aid them. This is the nature of serving and of the server and it would behoove us ALL to seek out and aid others who have this same frame of mind.
The next line in our invocation or mantram is in regard to the Christ as we say it in our version and in regard to the ONE SOUL as it is said in the original. Again we should see these two as the same in their essence. Just as the Soul of man is the Christ Within so the Soul cosmically, the Soul of God if you will, is the Christ principal in ALL creation. This principal is embodied the the Christ that we speak of daily, the Teacher alike of angels and men and the supreme head of the Church Invisible. So what are our words here? simply that the Love that IS Christ which is the same Love that IS God be found as the character of ALL who seek to serve and to aid in the work of the Christ. This is that universal Love of which we always speak and the same Love that He told us over 2000 years ago that we should express one to another. We know that He goes through many words to tell us that we should Love ALL and in this word Love we have created our own standard of understanding as this IS NOT the idea of Love that is presently perceived as Love by the world of men. For us again Love is: In a general sense love is benevolence, good will; that disposition of heart which inclines men to think favorably of their fellow men, and to do them good. In a theological sense, it includes supreme love to God, and universal good will to men. In this definition there is no criteria as to who to Love as we must understand that this is universal Love for ALL which is made easier for us in the understanding of the essential divinity of ALL men. The Master tells us of the importance of this Love by calling the directive to Love God and our fellowman the greatest commandments; He says: “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31). So here we KNOW what Love is in general terms and that it is not that emotional attraction that one may have for certain people or things and we KNOW as well the importance of Love for ALL men and the reality of this is that ALL men are our neighbors. We KNOW too what this Love means insofar as the way that a man should react to another from the words of the Master and at the same time we can come to understand what it means to Love oneself. The Master tells us that “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” (Matthew 7:12) and in this we should see that the Love for oneself is found in how we wish to be treated and the Love for others is found in treating others in this same way.
For the last line of our mantram, a line that does not change between versions, we will rely on the words that we have been posting as they say clearly what has to be said.
All prayer that is not self centered is a service to the Lord, to His Plan and to our fellowman; the Power and the Qualities of God that we pray to invoke are for the benefit of His Plan and all mankind. This is a prayer for the Power of God to be available to all who seek to serve Him; in this Power is the Wisdom, the Understanding and the personal strength that we need to properly serve the Lord. It is a prayer also that asks that all who serve the Lord be imbued with His Love, Christ’ Love, which defines the truth of our service to Him. And it is a prayer that, on a personal level, reminds us of our responsibilities in service which are summarized in the three words.
- Self-forgetfulness which is the absence of self interest in our prayer and our service; as the Master told us Ye cannot serve God and mammon”.
- Harmlessness which, as a positive aspect, is that meekness of Jesus and of which He also said “Blessed are the meek”.
- Right Speech which is the ability to control the tongue remembering that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” and that in self-forgetfulness, harmlessness and Love will our hearts be right.
GOODWILL IS LOVE IN ACTION
Note on the Quote of the Day
This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment.
To the God Who is in the Fire and Who is in the waters;
To the God Who has suffused Himself through all the world;
To the God Who is in summer plants and in the lords of the forest;
To that God be adoration, adoration.
Sh’vet Upanishad, II.17.
Today’s Quote of the Day is from ancient Hindu scripture. This book, the Sh’vet Upanishad, is from a group of books on the Philosophy of God that date back to more that five hundred years before Christ. Like many religious texts, and religions for that matter, there is a great variety of interpretations; Hindu scriptures are no exception. Our selection of this as our Quote of the Day is because it fits well into our discussions in this series called ON GOD and although we take most of our information from the Judaeo-Christian tradition, we do believe that all sources of spiritual revelation should be considered. The common Christian understanding regarding God as being outside of His creation is rather opposite of this saying and is opposite much of the reality of Christian Scripture as well. In this saying God is immanent in His creation as He is immanent in man, as the Spirit within the form.
