“And God said , Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying , Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed” (Genesis 1:26-2:25).
- The other part of this is in the next chapter where God “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul“. Here we have either a repetition and explanation of the creation of man in the image of God and both male and female or we have a secondary creation that brings the spiritual man into Life in the earth. Our understanding is the latter and this would become man’s existence in the Garden of Eden.
Yesterday’s post took us further down the road of esoteric science than we had heretofore gone as we were motivated to go into these ideas by the combination of the Master’s sayings to us regarding the divine ability that EACH OF US inherently has as the Power of the Soul, the True man, that can be expressed through the form Life on the Earth, expressed by means of what the Master tells us is faith and is believing without doubt and which we call the totalness of KNOWING, plus the words from Genesis that tell us that “God made….every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew“. In the relationship of these two ideas we expounded the premise that it is in the divine energy that IS the Soul and IS the Kingdom that contains the reality of man and that there is a lower correspondence of this to be found in relation to every thing that appears here on this Earth and today we tie together our thoughts from yesterday to say more clearly that there is an energy pattern of ALL that exists and that pattern is its own spiritual essence on its own plane of existence.
The Spirit manifests as the Soul and the Spirit IS the spiritual essence while the Soul is the concretized form of the True man and again we must understand that the man IS NOT the form on Earth before we can accept this as a Truth. This is our existence as the Soul on our plane which we call the Kingdom of God. Matter on this physical plane, which includes the body corporate and the individual cell of the body or of most ANY body, works out in much the same way; for each cell and for the corporate body there is an energy pattern, a spiritual essence if you will, that, while it does not measure up to our existence in the Kingdom of God, is to be found on those etheric levels where they Truly exist. Here we must try to visualize and to understand that just as the Spirit and the Soul of man are ONE and the same, just as the Christ and the Father are ONE and the same, so too is the physical appearance and the energy pattern of matter ONE and the same. ALL Life works this way on ALL planes of existence and, by our brief discussion of the current understandings of science regarding the energy of the atom and of sum atomic matter that, while invisible to the eye, can be measured and seen by way of equipment that is ‘tuned to their existence’, we should be able to get a glimpse somewhat of the reality of Life as it fades into ever more divine substance. And, the more divine the substance the greater control that it has over the less divine or, for our purposes, the more concrete.
Can we see here that the ideas of the plants and herbs being made before they were planted and before they grew can have a scientific reality to it if we could but look at them in the Light of energy patterns and their expression while remembering the reality of Einstein’s revelation that matter and energy ARE the same? There is much revelation in these ideas and much of this has been proven to be at least possible by the studies in science, both occult and of the world, which study energy, energy fields, auras and even the power of the mind of which mental substance can be seen as having a more divine nature than the more concrete physical substance. We must add here again that we have no pronouncements of authority on these matters and although we do speak of what we KNOW to be, we have no True evidence that we can present nor do we have the finite KNOWLEDGE to say that the specifics of what we say are entirely True; it is only in the broadest sense that we have the necessary revelation to speak.
Returning to our text we find next the reasoning for the created plants and herbs to not be in the Earth and this is in the simple statements that there had not been rain and no man to care for them. We must be careful in trying to put time frames on much of what we read in these verses from Genesis and we KNOW this today by the complexity of the Universe which, according to the order of verses, is created after the Earth as are the Sun and the Moon. These ideas are likely important to the early man as a way for him to understand his place in the scheme of things as well as his relationship to the God that made it ALL but for us today, and for several centuries back, there has been the greater reality that should be able to teach us that the order given is not as important as the idea behind it and it is this idea that is captured by Alexander Maclaren. Mr. Maclaren tells us that these teachings from the Book of Genesis are The revelation which it gives is the truth, obscured to all other men when it was given, that one God ‘in the beginning created the heaven and the earth.’ That solemn utterance is the keynote of the whole 12. In this reality that is given to the man in that day and to ALL succeeding generations we have the intended whole of the story which was painted for the man in that day in a way that he could both understand and accept it along with the reality of his own Life on the Earth. For a more complete look at Mr. Maclarens comments on this part of the Book of Genesis see In the Words of Jesus parts 171 and 512.
There is natural disconnect here in the verses of Genesis and this is in the reality that if these plants and herbs are not on the Earth growing, then how are they food for “every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life” as we read earlier, before the creation of man? In our premise here we should try to look at most ALL of the creation of things as we read of them in the the days of creation as the creation of the energy pattern, the spiritual essence, and look at ideas stated, like the herb for food, as a general Truth but perhaps not an immediate one. We should remember here that in our premise there is this spiritual essence behind ALL things in the Earth and this would include the land and the Earth as they are spoken of in the text which we must also remember is written for the understanding of the man in that day and, like ALL scripture, for the succeeding generations based upon their own revelation of Truth. We should add here that there may be holes in our theory and in our premise but the holes here are not greater than the delusion of the literal understanding and interpretation of the words of Genesis.
Moving on here we finally come to our point regarding the forming of man from the dust of the Earth which we find in our text after the ideas of the plant and the herb as we discuss above. We can look at this all in many ways but primarily we should look at this as epochs which cover eons of time and in so looking, we cannot say at what point during these eons the reality of the physical manifestation occurs nor can we say in what order things truly happen. However, in conjunction with science we can look at the reality as it is stated; that physical Life begins in the waters and in the air and progresses to land as the herb and the plant are made available and ALL things work in accordance with the evolution of Life forms and likely much in agreement with the science of it as we see it today. In line with this evolution of Life forms there is the ‘creation’ of forms that can and eventually will become suitable for use as vehicles of expression by the Souls that had been created by God and in the image of God and it is here in this simple statement that we find the reality of man IN form. God “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” and the reality for us is the idea of a living Soul in form; God, through evolution, had ‘created’ as form meet for the use as a the vehicle of expression for the Soul in form. As the text tells us there is then a haven for this man expressing through the evolved human form in the Earth and this haven is called the Garden of Eden; a place of peace and tranquility where there IS food and water and the protection offered by the symbolic Tree of Life and the Tree of the KNOWLEDGE of Good and Evil. Now we cannot KNOW if this happens for just one Soul taking possession of one Life form or if there are many but this does not matter as it is in principal that we are looking at this first incursion of the Life of the Soul expressing through the human form. We should understand here as well that there is a certain purity to this Life as the creation is not yet in the grips of illusion and of glamour; like most all things this Life of man in form starts out in the Purity of the Garden and has not yet been touched by the True carnal nature of the form Life which likely starts with the fulfillment of the appetites of the animal form.
There is a caution here given to this first man or men and this is that they should not desire the fruits of the Tree of the KNOWLEDGE of Good and Evil and in this is represented ALL that is illusion and glamour and the vanity that the Apostle Paul tells us of. Here and now this man KNOWS his truth, his origin and he KNOWS the Tree of Life as his Truth of existence and here Life for the man in form begins on the Earth. The text next goes into many verses about the rivers that flow out of this Garden and the lands through which they flow and it is hard to discern the meaning of this other that to give us the understanding that this Garden is a central point in this region of the Earth where this Life begins. We should try to see here that the way of Life as intended by the Plan of God is to bring forth an evolving animal kingdom whose Life depends upon the vegetable kingdom and where both of these entities depend upon the mineral kingdom for survival as we KNOW it. It is within this creation as it appears on the Earth that the evolution of species occurs and the we should understand that the sharp dispute between religion and science is easily resolved when we see that man IS NOT this body and that the body evolved to a place where it is suitable for use by the True man, the Soul, and then continues evolving as instinct gives way to emotion which gives way to the right use of the mind and in this we see that the current evolution is not so much in form as it is in psyche. So man does not come from the sea creature or, of later date, from the monkey but the form that he uses may well have. The True man comes from God who “created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him” and this rational should be enough to assuage the vanity of the man in the Earth who is yet caught up in the glamour and the illusions of Life in form.
There is much yet left unresolved in this story of creation and this because the story itself is not complete but rather a picture of the ways of God, the ONE God from whom ALL Life flows. Perhaps it is a part of this plan that the holes in the chronology and the story itself were always intended to be filled in by the acquired KNOWLEDGE of man which we have today in the form of science which not only can look backward into the origins of the forms which we use but can also look forward into the very mind of God as we can see finer and rarer forms of energy and radiation. Perhaps it is but a matter of time before we can see the Kingdom of God and the realm of the Soul; are we ready?
We will continue with our thoughts in the next post.
- Next we have the creation of the woman who was, according to the text, already created with the man during the creation in the image of God. Again this is either repetition and explanation or it yet another step in the bringing forth of the spiritual man into the Earth. There is another rather obscure saying in Genesis which may go well here: “And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose” (Genesis 6:1-2).
- Last we have the trees; “the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil“.

Note on the Quote of the Day
This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment:
We repeat here again a saying that is from the Bhagavad Gita and which goes well with our topic over the last several days. Today we see the God Within us as the Christ Within and this is good in the Christian world and this is True based upon our understanding of the Christ as the manifestation of God. We should see that it matters not what we call this Inner Man as it is the same in ALL, it is the Soul.
Thou carriest within thee a sublime Friend whom thou knowest not. For God dwells in the inner part of every man, but few know how to find Him. The man who sacrifices his desires and his works to the Beings from whom the principles of everything stem, and by whom the Universe was formed, through this sacrifice attains perfection. For one who finds his happiness and joy within himself, and also his wisdom within himself is one with God. And, mark well, the soul which has found God is freed from rebirth and death, from old age and pain, and drinks the water of Immortality.—Bhagavad-Gita
It is difficult to tell just what verses of the Bhagavad Gita the above is from; whether it is a paraphrase or a combination. It is from the book “The Great Initiates” by Édouard Schuré which was originally published in French in 1889 and perhaps it is in the translation of the verses that they become hard to recognize. However, the sheer beauty of the presentation caught my attention and so I share it with you. The Path to the Kingdom is the same no matter what religion one professes.
