And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:22-24).

We speak often about illusion and glamour and have done so since very early on in this blog. In a strange way it is illusion that is most real in our lives here in the Earth as we set about to live Life in form while believing that this is the place that we must succeed and where we must profit, physically, mentally and emotionally. Our discussions have been much centered around the Master’s words which are intended so diffuse these attitudes and desires and to set us onto the Path that leads to the strait gate which opens into the Kingdom of God. Many posts back we came upon the words of the Apostle Paul that put these ideas into a scriptural form and we have been exploring and using them ever since; in these words of the apostle from his Epistle to the Romans we have in a few short sentences the reality of our being here in the Earth and a hint at the reasons why. We explored these ideas in much detail beginning in In the Words of Jesus part 353 and we have used them in support of our understanding many times in the nearly 200 essays since then. His words are especially useful in our right understanding of the story or the creation of man as we read it in the Book of Genesis, a story that is taken literally yet today by many millions of people around the world and a story that we see as frozen in the time in which it is written. While much has advanced in the human family on Earth over these many centuries, there has been no advancement in the doctrines and the traditions that teach the literal view of Creation and which teach it in the same basic terms as those who taught them in the early days of the Church. The fall of man, original sin, and other like doctrines still color the teachings of the churches even in the face of overwhelming scientific discovery that should, at a minimum, cause us to revisit our long held ideas.

Why this revisiting is not done is found in the glamour with which we, as men in form, surround our thoughts and institutions affording them the sense of rightness that is difficult to shed and not only in the general theme of these teachings but also in the denominational differences as the Catholic will view them in one way while the Methodist, Lutheran and others will each have their own views. Each staunchly believes that their approach is right  and that the other denominations and any that do not believe as they do are wrong. This is glamour from the perspective of religious teaching which is our subject today but this force is felt in all arenas of the Life of men. From politics to economics to the presumed straightforward teachings of science and history, groups of men tend to put their own slant onto the subjects bending the Truth to meet their beliefs and finding tidbits of scriptures or variations in culture to support their individual ideas. Most ALL men use this emotional attraction to what they perceive themselves to be and to what they may believe as a wedge of separation between themselves and others ofttimes making themselves the better because of their certain traits and beliefs. As we have previously discussed this takes on even deeper tones from the angle of self perception and creates yet deeper divides concerning race, culture, nation and even state and city preferences for some.

The resolution of this is of course in the right understanding of the True man, the Soul, where there is no race, no religion, no politics, no culture, no economics; nothing but the Good, the Beautiful and the True as it exits in the Kingdom of God and, relating this back to our discussion from Genesis, as it existed in the Garden of Eden. While it is useful for the understanding of our use of the word, saying that glamour is man’s emotional attachment to the things that he KNOWS, does not help us in understanding its reality in the world and how it is that we MUST as aspirants overcome it. In our view glamour is one of the two great psychic forces of the world itself from the perspective of the Soul; the other is of course its evil twin so to speak, illusion, and with this we will deal a bit later. While we do not purport to have the book on this phenomenon we can say as we have above regarding mans emotional attachment to his, or his groups, beliefs and ways and we should add here as well that it is glamour that gives the man that ability to staunch belief of those things even in the face of evidence to the contrary. Looking at the Life of the Christ in the Gospels we can see how His teachings are intended to dissuade the Jew away from tradition, away from the formed beliefs that they used to supplant actual scripture and away from the lifting of their own beliefs above any other including the teachings of the Master Himself. It is glamour that blinded many against Him to such a degree that they saw the ALL Good of His miracles as acts against their beliefs and while these things are generally viewed as a struggle by the Jewish rulers to retain their power, the better reason is found in this concept of glamour. A few examples of this may do well here:

  • Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition” (Matthew 15:2-6). While this is not the part of this interaction between the Jews and the Master that we generally use and see in use elsewhere, it is in this part that we find the reality of what the Jews have done and Jesus is railing against it. They have by tradition taken to believe the words of their forefathers regarding washing, words that find no place in scripture but which they relate as though they do. At the same time, the Master calls out a particular instance of scripture that by their tradition they have changed so that they no longer believe it according to the spirit in which it was offered but rather in a way that is convenient for them to do.
  • And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold , there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed , and not on the sabbath day” (Luke 13:10-14). Here we have one of the several instances of His healing or doing some Good on the sabbath which are generally viewed in doctrine as that struggle that we refer to above and also as envy and like feelings against the Master because He is getting more acclaim than they. Here we have men, Pharisees, scribes, Sadducees and others, who believe that they are the representatives of God in the Earth and while Jesus may be usurping their power among the people, their reticence is more to do with our idea of glamour than it does with the sense of competition which sense is likely fed by glamour as well.
  • This dynamic of belief is exposed in this example from Matthew’s Gospel where the Master is accused of being in league with the devil and here again we can see the evidence of their strong belief that they were the chosen ones: “Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils” (Matthew 12:22-24).

In these examples we should be able to see the point of view of the Jewish religious rulers in that day, a view that stretches forward in time against the overwhelming evidence of His words and His works not to mention the billions of people who have come to believe. Regardless of what is presented to them they still wait for their Messiah and this in total disbelief of the Life and divinity of the Christ. What is the motivation behind this view that is held by the majority of religious Jews around the world? It is the religious and cultural effect of glamour. And this sense of glamour is one that is not stagnant but has grown in its effect from the time of those Pharisees and other rulers of the Jews more than two thousand years ago and which should point sharply to our idea that is was not a struggle for their retention of power nor was it envy although these may have played some role. In the Christian world much the same dynamic is found over this two thousand years of doctrine as new ideas were squashed and battles fought to protect the beliefs of those who held the power. Whether the Crusades and the Reformation Wars were fought for political reasons or if they were based on the conflicting belief systems or some combination of both, we can surely find our understanding of glamour deeply seated in these happenings as well as much else of what has happened in the history of the world. This phenomenon of ‘religious persecution’ is not limited to the Christian world nor to the controversies with the Jews over Christ but are worldwide in nature and touch most every religion and the perspective is most always a dislike, even a hatred, for one’s different beliefs which are seen as a danger to the prevalent or dominant beliefs. And this continues today around the world; not in wars but in strife and in words that defile and degrade the beliefs of others and all the while each group maintains that their belief IS right above all others and many can recite chapter and verse to support their claims; ALL this IS founded in that emotional response that we call glamour.

There is a muddy line between glamour and illusion and there are aspects of each to be found in both and, as mind and emotions do intermingle in the world and in man, so both of these should intermingle as well. We are trying to portray glamour as the more emotionally based of these two psychic forces while we say that illusion is the more mental and we will pursue this as we go. We should note however that in our words above there is much thought at work albeit much of this is emotionally driven and seated in the desires and lusts rather than in the reasoning of the mind; in True reasoning much of the held beliefs would fade to naught.  Illusion then is the counterpart in the world to glamour, what we have called above the evil twin, and it is in illusion that man builds his castles in the sky. We should note here that illusion also defies reason and is strongly related to glamour in that way; illusion is better seen in our perceptions while glamour is better seen in our feelings but by both man is deluded and deceived.

We should understand that a right understanding of these forces can go a long way in our own understanding of ourselves and others and can help explain the unexplainable insofar as the positions that a man can take about nearly anything. By right understanding we can note as well the instances of these in our own lives and see the reality of how we ourselves can at times try to defend the indefensible. Most all prejudices, most all hatreds, are founded in these ideas of glamour and illusion and these ARE NOT affecting us as individuals only but there are group effects and national effects to these as well that can be seen in the same terms that we have outlined above for glamour.

We will move on to our discussion of illusion in the next post as this can be rather lengthy as well but before we close here today, let us look at this again in relation to our thoughts on the Genesis of man that we have been discussing. The story of the creation that we have been studying does not effectively present either glamour or illusion per se but rather the effective beginning of these forces in the Life of man in form. In Adam and Eve we have the Purity of Souls taking to themselves bodies of flesh and the resultant personality that is created by the combination of the Soul’s consciousness with the form in the world. By the introduction of mind and emotion as provided by the personality, the consciousness has more choices to which he can attend and by the very nature of the newness and the desire for experience, the consciousness aligns itself with the instincts and the appetites of the form itself and the desires and the wants of the personality. It is in the appetites and the instincts of the form and the desires and the wants of the personality that glamour and illusion are found and it is into these that the Soul steadily devolves. It is here as well that we are again reminded of the words of Paul which we are finding so useful in our understanding of Genesis and which words are rendered more understandable by our better view of the creation of man. We will end here again with Paul’s words and leave our discussion of the Tree of Life and our last point below for another day.

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.22For we knowthat the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:20-23).

  • This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.  And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died” (Genesis 5:1-5) .

Note on the Quote of the Day

This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment:

This Quote of the Day is the antithesis of glamour and illusion. In this mantram are the thoughts about ourselves and our brothers in the world that can diffuse these forces that hold a man in the world of things and prevent his spiritual progress.

Mantram of Unification

The sons of men are one and I am one with them.
I seek to love, not hate;
I seek to serve and not exact due service;
I seek to heal, not hurt.

Let pain bring due reward of light and love.
Let the Soul control the outer form, and life and all events,
And bring to light the love that underlies the happenings of the time.

Let vision come and insight.
Let the future stand revealed.
Let inner union demonstrate and outer cleavages be gone.
Let love prevail.
Let all men love.

The Mantram of Unification is a meditation and a prayer that at first affirms the unity of all men and the Brotherhood of Man based on the Fatherhood of God. The first stanza sets forth several truly Christian ideals in Unity, Love, Service and Healing. The second stanza is a invocation to the Lord and to our own Souls asking that from the pain (if there can truly be any) incurred in focusing on the Spirit and not the world will come Light and Love into our lives and that we begin to function as Souls through our conscious personalities. We ask that the spiritual control of our lives will bring to light for us the Love that underlies world events; a Love that the world oriented man will not see working out behind the scenes and also that the Love that we bring forth, individually and as a world group, can be seen by all and ultimately in all. Finally, in the last stanza we ask for those things that are needed for Love to abound. Vision and insight so that we can direct our attention properly; revelation of the future in the sense that all can see the Power of Love in the world; inner union so that we do not fall back into the world’s ways, that we faint not; and that a sense of separation, the antithesis of brotherhood, ends as we know it today. Let Love Prevail, Let All Men Love.spiritual control of our lives will bring to light for us the Love that underlies world events; a Love that the world oriented man will not see working out behind the scenes.
