“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren” (James 1:12-16).
We have been carrying the above words from the Apostle James for several days; we chose these sayings as a part of our discussion on desire and lust as here we find what is like a missing link in our understanding of these forces of the world that are enhanced by the illusion and the glamour and which work through James keyword here: temptation. We should understand here that it is the combination of ALL of this that keeps a man from realizing Truth and his own True self; it is the power of these forces of illusion and glamour that make a man to believe that the Life in form IS his True Life when it IS NOT and that the self in the world is more important and better than others’ selfs and this glamour stretches to most all of a man’s undertakings; from place of birth to religion one believes that he IS better than others while the reality IS that we are ALL essentially the same. This very idea of sameness is refuted by those caught in the illusion and the glamour and it can take possession of reality for many who believe that they are favored over others. Working together illusion and glamour upset the mind and the emotions in ways that keep man back from a True understanding of his own divinity while at the same time they can be seen as responsible for the dramatic evolution of man’s Life in form which further enhances their power in the world of men.
While caught in this vanity, this illusory belief system that tells a man that what he wants to believe is True, man lays himself open to the desires and the lusts of Life which are the combination of the physical, emotional and mental instincts and appetites plus those learned behaviors which will vary from man to man. In this world ALL of this takes on an arbitrary nature where, dependent upon the person, his place and his culture, his belief systems and his worldly attitudes which ALL will vary greatly, each believes, based upon his own nature and nurture, that he is right and each will make himself as comfortable as possible withing the constraints of his psyche which IS the combination of his physical, emotional and mental equipment and proclivities. We must try to understand is that this IS NOT a uniform mold and there are as many variations as there are people in incarnation at any given time. This is rather a general way looking at this from the perspective the actions and the activities of men in the world. ALL differ and most all will rationalize their place in the world; for those who cannot or will not find peace in this rationalization there are the great array of physical, mental and emotional issues that effect humanity and there is as well that opportunity to break out of the general mold of Life in form and proceed as we do; as aspirants who are seeking and knocking and striving toward a True realization of the self in form. ALL is subjected to the vanity, the illusion and the glamour and what we become is a result of how we allow these forces to be applied in our lives; if we cannot look past our existence here on this Earth then we rationalize and accept and remain subjected to the vanity of the Plan but, if we can see that inkling of Light from our own Souls and can pursue it, we are poised to overcome, to stand with the True followers of the Christ who tells us that we CAN DO as He did and this includes His own saying that “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
A part of this illusion and glamour, this vanity that the Apostle Paul tells us of, is the self propelling effect of them in our lives as we struggle and fight to protect our beliefs against the beliefs of others and we do so without any True understanding of their right or wrong; this IS what propelled the Pharisees and the other rulers of the Jews to come out against Christ and His disciples. As we noted in a recent post, it mattered not that the Master did Good Words and spoke Godly words; He was wrong in the eyes of many and a threat to the rationalization of others, He was a threat to their status quo. And these ideas of right and wrong likely matter little even today where men erect strong barriers against most any thing that can come against their beliefs and it matters not the relative importance of these beliefs in one’s Life. This panoply of differing thoughts and beliefs around the world are the source on the one hand of the differentiation that we have and the richness of individual cultures is largely produced by the accumulation of the thoughts and beliefs of the different nations and continents that have woven them into their very nature. These thoughts and beliefs however are also the cause of much of the friction and the wars and most any group can and does take their past egregious acts against others and rationalize them into their own sense of being right. We can see this at work in most ALL world conflicts, that based upon one parties sense of being right, others are made to suffer and this phenomenon reaches back in time, further back than the Crusades and up to our present day where if we look at the reality of the more recent conflicts we will see one party trying to exercise their own sense of being right upon others. Mankind can ever build a case for war as he does not realize that it is in reality the illusion and the glamour in which we are mired that propels us. If we could but recognize the power of these forces, we could also build a case for PEACE.
We should see here that illusion and glamour do not only upset our perspective on religion and spirituality, they upset the entirety of human events. And, we should understand that this IS the vanity that Paul tells us of and that this vanity, this illusion and glamour, are a part of the Plan of God, the Plan for the redemption of the Earth itself as the culmination of the redemption of the individual bodies that we use. Of course we can only surmise as to the goals of this Plan and the idea of redemption comes from the apostle in his words to the Romans. This being said however still leaves us with the reality to which Paul gives us words; we ARE mired in illusion and glamour, these DO play a very large role in our lives both individually and corporately and the way to escape, to overcome, these world forces is through our proper focus on the Truth of Life, the Unity of ALL and the Love that the Master teaches us. While we do repeat these words from the apostle frequently, we do so because we believe that in them are contained an understanding of Life from the perspective of man and of God and we should note here that we too have beliefs. It is in discerning these things that we find our resolution in James’ listing of the nature of Wisdom from above and in Paul’s accounting of the fruit of the Spirit; these can become our ready aids in ascertaining our own Truths from the spiritual perspective. Repeating again Paul’s words on our understanding of the role of illusion and glamour in the world of men we have:
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:16-23).
Although we have spent many days on Paul’s words above, there is ever the opportunity to see yet more in them than we had previously recognized. Here today we have added additional verses at the beginning, verses which tell us the reality of our Inner Man and His prompting of the carnal consciousness. In this we should try to remember that the apostle is speaking to disciples and aspirants, men who do feel this presence of the Spirit Within communing with his consciousness; that silent realization that he IS a Son of God. And it is in this realization that there is also the silent expectation that one can overcome the “sufferings of this present time” and find that glory which is the “manifestation of the sons of God” by which we should see that this is His manifestation in the world as the expression of the man in form. We should remember here that for us the whole of our objective and our goal is to express through the form Life, the body and the personality, the Love and the Power of the Christ Within and if we read Paul’s words with this in mind, they can take on new meanings. As Souls we KNOW who and what we ARE but this is lost in the illusion and the glamour of the form Life in the world as we consciously become the man in form. The Truth however is never far from us and it IS eager to get out, and, when we can see and understand these things we can better understand the apostles use of the idea of “earnest expectation“. Incarnation after incarnation, the work of the Soul is to find his expression through form in the world and to do so requires that the consciousness of the man come to be controlled by the Soul and not by the deluded personality. As the apostle goes on, he tells us that we have been subjected to this delusion with a purpose and while we may not understand this we should accept it as a Truth based on, if nothing else, the very nature of Life in the world when viewed with an open mind and heart. We ALL live in a world of illusion and while we cannot or will not admit to this, it is a Truth and it is the reason that we ALL see things differently; by the Plan of God we are individualized individuals and while we may break off into groups who feel and think alike, we are yet in this world of illusion as individuals and we rationalize both of these aspects, our individuality and our illusions which we make real.
The apostle does however give us this reality in a way that we KNOW that there is an end and from the perceptive of the disciple and the aspirant who can look past this Life in form, the man who understands his essential reality is the man who can see the reality in Paul’s words as we see them above and who can at the same time discern the reality of much of the scriptures that are painted so differently by doctrine. Paul tells us of the vanity and we understand this as illusion and as glamour and we should remember here that Paul does not use this word vanity but rather a Greek word, mataiotes, which is translated as vanity and which the lexicon defines as what is devoid of truth and appropriateness 2. Tying this to Vincent’s understanding of the use of vanity here: the reference is to a perishable and decaying condition, separate from God, and pursuing false ends 4 we can see the reality of illusion and the use of the idea of glamour is to give the emotional response to this same effect that stems from the word rendered as vanity. The promise then of it ALL is in the reality of the expectation of God or His KNOWING what the end IS and this is what the apostle gives us in the next verse which tells us of our eventual deliverance which is our eventual expression of the Christ Within; “the glorious liberty of the children of God“.
This is the whole of our journey, from our first incarnation into Life in form on this Earth as it is depicted in the properly discerned Book of Genesis, through incarnation after incarnation as the Soul works toward that realization of “the manifestation of the sons of God“. The whole of this Earth existence is a great mystery as to the whys and the hows but these give way to the reality that it IS, we ARE here and we ARE mired in the ways of the world, the vanity as Paul tells us, and while it seems that no one tells us how it is that we get out in specific language, the scriptures of the world are filled with just this information. We should try to understand that this is ALL a long range plan that covers eons of time and much of that time was spent by humanity in getting to where it is today and in this the vanity that man is subjected to is an invaluable tool. At the same time however there has always been an exit for those who seek it, for those who knock, for those who can then take their turn helping the rest of the the human family to see the Light. As we often say, these are very complex matters and understanding them is a difficult thing but, from the perspective of the disciple and the aspirant, just a glimpse can be sufficient to give one a sense of the reality which, although he cannot express it, he can KNOW that it is there and True.
We did not intend to go into this today but this was the natural result of where we began with the words from James at the top of our essay regarding temptation as it leads to desire and lust and as the result of illusion and glamour. We will get to the idea that brought us to Paul’s words again, redemption, in the next post and then try to finish up our discussion on the requirements for discipleship as they are in these last two sayings below….and the words from James above as well.
- “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).
- “Herein is my Father glorified , that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples” (John 15:8).
We will continue with our thoughts in the next post.

Note on the Quote of the Day
This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment:
Leaving again the Great Invocation, we encourage ALL to read and reread it and our comments as in these words can be found the keys to our spiritual reality.
From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.
From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.
From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men–
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.
From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.
Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.
This prayer is a part of our Prayers and Meditations section and there is much information about it there and in our discussion of it in the Quote of the Day section of In the Words of Jesus parts 128-132
The above Invocation or Prayer does not belong to any person or group but to all Humanity. The beauty and the strength of this Invocation lies in its simplicity, and in its expression of certain central truths which all men, innately and normally, accept—the truth of the existence of a basic Intelligence to Whom we vaguely give the name of God; the truth that behind all outer seeming, the motivating power of the universe is Love; the truth that a great Individuality came to earth, called by Christians, the Christ, and embodied that love so that we could understand; the truth that both love and intelligence are effects of what is called the Will of God; and finally the self-evident truth that only through humanity itself can the Divine Plan work out.
Like the Lord’s Prayer, this invocation is a World Prayer which is as all that a prayer is intended to be. It is a prayer for the uplifting of the Human Family out of the mire of materialism and selfishness. The Lord’s Prayer asks nothing for the individual praying it but asks that its benefits be for US and for WE which is why it was given by the Christ as a prayer and as a model over 2000 years ago. This invocation is also attributed to the Christ who, as He promised, has never left us; He, through channels that we do not readily understand, has Himself instructed His disciples to distribute this prayer and to encourage its use as a world prayer and as an aid in preparing the world for His return.
The first three stanzas of this prayer should be understood as reflecting the effective potencies of the Trinity which is God and which, when brought down to an individual level, the Trinity which is Man. His Will, His Love and His Light we should seen as the Potent Powers of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts!
