The point we have been working on from our original list is:

  • Last we have the trees; “the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil“.

To this we have added these words from the Third Chapter as they bring us the full story of “the tree of knowledge of good and evil“; how Adam and Eve are deceived by the ways of the world, tend toward desire for the things that the tree offers and then their tasting of the pleasures of the Earth which action sets them adrift in the world of illusion and glamour and leaves them fully subjected to the vanity which is the nature Life in the world of things. This is a shortened version of what we have been discussing and this is our interpretation of the reality of the fall of man as opposed the doctrines that the literal understanding of these verses have created. Our verses are:

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened , and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons” (Genesis 3:1-7).

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return” (Genesis 3:8-19).

We noted that the ‘punishments’ listed here are not ‘punishments’ at all but rather a picture of what is to become the reality for man, especially for the man in “those days’. We should remember that we DO NOT KNOW exactly when ‘those days’ were as we are not given a real time line to work from but if we were to rely upon science and their determination of when the human animal became a thinker and all that goes with that as planning and improving, then we could like be close to the reality of this creation story. Here we should remember that this creation of man that we are discussing is first of all the creation of the human animal in the animal kingdom and we have no guidance as to when this may have occurred and the habit of doctrine, counting backwards based upon the years that the first descendants lived, does not work at all and much because we do not KNOW the reality of what is called a year. The use of this word is apparently diverse and while Strong’s defines is strictly as year 3, the lexicon tells us that it means year; as division of time; as measure of time; as indication of age; a lifetime (of years of life)2 but in neither do we see the reality of a year being as we see it today; one revolution of the Earth around the Sun. The length of the year is an assumption in doctrine and it is interesting that in the untimed Epochs of the creation period, the facility of measurement IS NOT created until the Fourth Day and that there is NO ONE present than could count them. In our prior posts on these days, or as we prefer, Epochs, we have seen a few anomalies that cannot be reconciled such as the vegetable kingdom being created before the presence of the Sun and the Moon and the idea given in later verses that tell us that this kingdom is created before it is in the Earth. These ideas and others like them should suffice to show us that there is no profit in literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis but doctrine and traditions do not move on this nor on the unpractical and un-ORDERLY ideas found in their use of the numbers of years as counted in our time..

With the creation then of the creatures of the sea in the Fifth Day and the creation of the creatures of the Earth in the Sixth Epoch we have a point of reference that can bring science and religious doctrine closer together but here then we find the creation of man which is totally misunderstood and which puts a definite divide into any trend toward reconciliation. We say here misunderstood because the reality of this IS that the man that is created on this same day as the animal kingdom in not the man of the Earth; the man of the Earth is a part of that animal kingdom. The man spoken of is “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27) and since God IS NOT a man, there must be some other understanding. We have posited before that this creation of man is the manifestation of the Soul as the expression of the Spirit in the realm of the Soul, the Kingdom of God, and in this premise we have man “in the image of God” as the essential divine Trinity which we should be able to understand from our chart below. It is after the Seventh Day that we find the dialogue which we have been discussing; it is after an unknown length of time from day one to day seven, an unknown length of time of “rest” in day seven, that the True man, the Soul, is brought into contact with the human animal form and when “man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). Again here we have doctrine and tradition that sees this episode in Chapter Two as a repetition of the presumed creation in the Sixth Day of the man and we should note that these doctrines and traditions go back in time to when this may have been the only way that the man could understand these things. Our reality however is apart from doctrine and tradition and says that the human animal IS created and in the same Epoch we find the creation of man, the Soul, the True man “in the image of God“. So that we are not confused here we should also remember that the Spirit which IS man already exists, nothing can be added or subtracted from God who IS ALL, and our understanding here must also be that the Spirit and the Soul ARE ONE as the Son and the Father ARE ONE. The Soul then is the manifest expression of the Spirit and is, in this episode of creation, prepared for his further work with the forms of the world; first as the guide and the nurturer from above who is given dominion over ALL things in the Earth in Chapter Six and next as an active participant in the Life of the human form which he takes to himself when the form is enough evolved to support his Life, the Life and the consciousness of the Soul.

And this is where we began today, not KNOWING the meaning of ‘those days’, and we continue with our point that this beginning of Life in the Earth as that great step taken by Adam and Eve comes at some point in the history of the evolving human form and we cannot tell when this may have been but we can be led to a closer understanding by understanding at what point the man of scientific history displays the ability of thought and motivation. It is here in time that we can likely place Adam and Eve or whatsoever they represent and it is our premise that these Souls that appear as Adam and Eve have taken possession of the human animal form that is now so suited to express the Life and the consciousness of the Soul. It is here also that the normal Life of the man in form begins as the human animal bodies that are created by this union of Adam and Eve are human bodies that will be born to express the Life and consciousness of a particular Soul who will incarnate in them. Our preview here is complicated by those out of time words in Chapter Six of Genesis that we discussed a few posts back regarding “the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4) and while we cannot KNOW exactly what this means, we can premise that it is in reference to our text from yesterday regarding the devolving of the Souls into the ways of the world where the carnal self takes over the Life. Here the carnal personality hijacks the consciousness which was formerly attendant to the things of God but is now consumed with the things of the world and its pleasures which state is the result of the deception, of the illusion and glamour which is called the serpent and the lure of the desire nature to the things of the world which is called the tree and the tasting of the pleasures of Life in the world which is Adam and Eve eating of the forbidden fruit. There is reason why this tree is referred to as “the tree of knowledge of good and evil” and this is plainly in the name. In tasting the fruit of this tree there is the realization of the vast expanse of human experience, the sensations and the thoughts and the feelings, and then the strong desire, the lust, for ever more. This is KNOWLEDGE of the things of the world and, in this consciousness that was heretofore concerned only with the things of  God, Adam and Eve have the recollection also of the lure of the Good, the Beautiful and the True as it exists in the purity of the Soul.

Here now they KNOW both and there is no question as to which side wins out as we have history to tell us that the man becomes so devolved into the ways of the world, which is the essential meaning of the word evil in our context here, that he loses ALL understanding of his True divine nature. We should remember also that this IS the Plan and, while we do not KNOW the purpose except by the hint we get from the Apostle Paul, we should try to understand that these punishments are but our fate, the result of being mired in the morass of Life in form. There has however always been a way out and it is found in the antithesis of what we read about in the doings of Adam and Eve; if we are not beguiled by the serpent, if we do not let the fruit of the tree attract us, and if we do not eat that fruit, we are FREE. And this FREEDOM is available to us at any time that we choose to turn away; at anytime that we choose not to fall prey to the illusion and the glamour of the world, the vanity as Paul tells us, and in this new mind we choose to push off the desires and the lusts and to no longer taste the fruit of the things of the world. These things are the teachings of the Master and these things are our deliverance and these things are done by our focus upon the things of God and not the things of the world.

So then what are the punishments? We discussed the first one in the last essay which concerns the way of the serpent, the deceiving nature of Life in form. In the words that refer to the serpent we find the attitude of Life against those serpent like deceptions, that they are lower than the low, grounded in the Earth and will forever be so. Then there is the enmity against deception that the woman and her seed will have against the illusions of Life in the world and their progression through time; most ALL hate deception and being deceived but it must be realized in Life and when it comes to the illusions of Life in form, most are yet blind. The last thought from the last post was the idea to be conveyed by the word bruise which we ended with and did not define except in a hypothetical way. This word is alternately rendered as ‘crush’ and ‘strike’ in other translations but these words do not help our understanding any more that bruise; Young’s Literal Translation (YLT) gives us this rendition which may help to understand the translational problems that we face here: “and enmity I put between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he doth bruise thee — the head, and thou dost bruise him — the heel“.  Perhaps the better reference here is in relation to the self and to what the Apostle James tells us saying: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). For the one who is deceived by the things of the world there is hurt by the deception to the head, the way to God and, at the same time there is the steady continuation of the deception that further hurts the man in the world, dragging him yet lower into life in the Earth. There is no clear understanding here but what we offer is better than the common understanding of an actual snake or serpent and that the bruise is in stepping on its head with one’s heel which is perhaps bitten. Whether we see this as deception as we do or as  the devil or Satan under foot, we should understand that these are essentially the same thing.

Continuing with our other points of punishment we find:

  • Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children“. We should note that up till this time there had not been a self conscious woman giving birth but rather just the human animal doing so in the way that all animals do with no thought or feelings as we understand them. We can see here that aversion to pain and the anticipation of pain and suffering are the sorrow and that this is a natural function of self conscious Life in form.
  • thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee“. Here again we have a way of Life in form, that the woman takes a place that is subservient to the man in the relationship of the sexes and there is likely a valid reality for this which is perhaps tied to our ability to KNOW the totality of good and evil as it is presented to us by the tree. In our many incarnations each of us has been a Soul in possession of a male body and then in possession of a female body and it IS ONLY in form that this dynamic has any effect. Many cultures that ARE NOT Judeo-Christian hold this relationship of male dominance in the world yet today and in this we should see that it was a natural way of the Plan of God; we should see also the steady dissolution of this dynamic in the world today and especially by those cultures that have a more worldly view.
  • Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life“. In the word sorrow here we should also have the understanding of hardship and the same should apply above in childbirth. In the word curse we have some difficulty in understanding especially as it pertains to the ground; perhaps the intent is that the man will not find vegetation plainly available to him in the Earth but that he will have to toil for it and his is the hardship of planting and reaping the things of the Earth that will be his food. And we should see here as well that this is his role as a man and in this we should consider the differences in the body structure of each.
  • Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return“. Amplifying the words of the previous verse we find “Thorns also and thistles” which further complicate the hardship, the sorrow, of planting and reaping and for a long time this is likely True. That he will “eat the herb of the field” confirms his position, telling him that if he desires to eat, he must perform his work in the world and that this work is consuming as the idea of sweat conveys.

All of these punishments are but the ways of Life in the Earth and if we can consider that the whole of this story of Adam and Eve is part and parcel of the Plan of God, then we can understand these things away from the doctrines and traditions of the fall of man; we can understand that the Garden of Eden is that place where man entered into the world and that once man tasted of the pleasures of Life in form, he is destined to then fulfill his role as a Soul in the Earth. While we do not KNOW what this role exactly is intended to accomplish we should be sure that in this ORDERED Universe that there IS an intention, that there IS a Plan.

We will continue with our thoughts in the next post and continue on to our point below.

  • This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.  And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died” (Genesis 5:1-5) .

Note on the Quote of the Day

This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment:

Our Quote of the Day below can be seen in relationship to our text above as we must awake and see past the illusion and the glamour of Life in form; before we can begin to progress, we must be able to recognize that this illusion exists and that it has always existed can help us in our understanding. We should understand here as well that the master that is spoken of is one’s own True self, one’s own Soul.

If you are awake in the presence of a master One moment will show you the way. The fool is his own enemy. The mischief is his undoing. How bitterly he suffers! Why do what you will regret? Why bring tears upon yourself? Do only what you do not regret, And fill yourself with joy. For a while the fool’s mischief Tastes sweet, sweet as honey. Bit in the end it turns bitter. And how bitterly he suffers! For months the fool may fast, Eating from the tip of a grass blade. Still he is not worth a penny Beside the master whose food is the way. Fresh milk takes time to sour. So a fool’s mischief Takes time to catch up with him. Like the embers of a fire It smolders within him. Whatever a fool learns, It only makes him duller. Knowledge cleaves his head. For then he wants recognition. A place before other people, A place over other people. “Let them know my work, Let everyone look to me for direction.” Such are his desires, Such is his swelling pride. One way leads to wealth and fame, The other to the end of the way. Look not for recognition But follow the awakened And set yourself free.

The above is from the the sayings of the Buddha in the Dhammapada, from the section entitled The Fool. Fool here should be seen as reflecting the person who follows the worldly ways and this regardless of one’s intended spiritual nature or standing if this can be so expressed. This is a lesson in following one’s master who we look at as the Master, the Christ, and all those disciples of Christ that have come before us; they KNOW the way that we, being seekers, should follow. In this is a lesson on being humble and meek, the antithesis of pride.
